More disappointments for Team USA. It is certainly proving hard for two-time defending champions to win the third medal, and that is proving true here. Check out the standings:
The top of the leaderboard is holding steady, but we have a new last place! Putin on the Ritz is the defending back-to-back gold medalist from Vancouver and London, but has a hill to climb to catch back up in these games. There is still a long way to go, but right now it looks like she's pulling a Shaun White or Shani Davis. Fortunately, Putin didn't have either of those non-medalists on her team. (I had Shani - what's up with that? C'mon man!) Life is harder without Michael Phelps dropping points.
On the flip side, Gold Rush'n is the two time defending last place winner, so the first gold earned by her team in the games by Eric Frenzel in the Nordic Combined came at an opportune time to move up the leaderboard.
Team Mark continues to have the golden touch - his team members have only won gold medals so far (5).
However, Sochia Pet has had the strongest overall showing to date by winning 7 medals - 3 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze, tacking on a Nordic Combined bronze from Magnus Krog.
Cuban Medal Crisis scores the first double medalist with the Russian pairs figure skaters powering their way (or salchowing their way?) to the top in the individual and team events. Cold Runnings scored a bronze in the same event.
Another interesting wrinkle in how we split up the lugers (in order to have enough for everyone to pick) placed doubles luge teammates on different teams. Live Weyer and Silver Sputniks each chose one of the "Tobys" as the Tobias German pair struck gold. Germany is the clear favorite for the team relay so these teams are looking to cash in again on a hopeful double gold.
Snowboarding continues to surprise with the favorite women's halfpipe contenders Torah Bright (Insert Team Name) and Kelly Clark (Cuban Medal Crisis) falling to silver and bronze respectively.
The excitement continues tomorrow! Still lots of points on the board to win!
