We have reached the final day. Here are the standings with only 3 events left with medals to be awarded!
First the breakdown from today - time is running out to make a move toward the podium.
My team (Cuban Medal Crisis) entered the day with big hopes in the Biathlon relay, with Svendsen and Bjorndalen anchoring a strong Norwegian crew. Well, Bjorndalen did his job, but "Super" Svendsen tanks again. I watched the race today and the commentator said "Svendsen has really built up during the games to deliver a stellar performance today." and "Svendsen has hit 97% of his targets in Sochi," right before he misses so many that he uses up all his extras and has to take a penalty lap. Major choke job that left Norway off the medal stand. When Bjorndalen finished he had a MINUTE lead. Ugh. Double gold or double anything would have helped. Now I have to hang onto hope.
Putin on the Ritz picked the best cross-country skiier by far with Marit Bjoergen taking her third gold.
Ireen Wust earned another gold for the team pursuit in Long Track, and that pushed her total to 19, making her the MVP to date. Of course, Team Mark has her pushing his team to the top.
Cold Runnings received a silver in Alpine, but really missed out on the Long-Track Team Pursuit. She had two Dutch speed skaters on her team, but neither was on the team to earn a gold medal. Jorrit Bergsma actually was an alternate and could have skated in a prelim to earn a medal even if he didn't compete in the finals, but he "protested" the team as he felt upset he did not get picked for the A team. By doing this, he did not skate in any qualifying race and thus does not earn the medal.
Silver Sputniks had a good day - Therese Johaug taking the Cross Country silver, and Tae Mum Bo earning a team Long Track silver.
Live Weyer earned the Long Track team gold from the Netherlands with Lotte van Beek, but missed out on the Hockey Bronze when the US fell embarrassingly. The 3 Bronze points would have pushed Live Weyer into silver medal position. The US team was clearly too distraught over the consequences of their loss to Canada:
Insert Team Name Here also scored points from the Long Track Team with a gold from the Netherlands. (ASIDE NOTE: WHY DID I PICK SHANI DAVIS, SHEESH PICK SOMEONE WITH A DUTCH PASSPORT NEXT TIME.)
She is sitting within striking distance of the podium.
So now comes the last day - what's left to earn?
There are three medal events to occur:
Men's Ice Hockey - Canada (Sochia Pet) vs. Sweden (Putin on the Ritz)
Each are guaranteed at least 5 points, but who will get the bonus 5 from the gold? Sochia Pet could jump into 4th place from this gold alone.
4-Man Bobsleigh
Putin on the Ritz - 4-Man Russia
Silver Sputniks - 4-Man USA
Live Weyer - 4-Man Germany
Don't forget that Bobsleigh is a TEAM event so 10, 5, and 3 points are on the line here.
Cross-Country Skiing - Men's 50km Mass Start Free
If you have a Men's Cross-Country Skiier - good luck!
Putin on the Ritz - Peter Northug, Norway
Silver Sputniks - Federico Pellegrino, Italy
Live Weyer - Nikita Kriukov, Russia
Gold Rush'n - Johan Olsson, Sweden
Insert Team Name Here - Alexy Poltoranin, Kazakhstan
Cuban Medal Crisis - Alexander Legkov, Russia
Sochia Pet - Alex Harvey, Canada

Day 14: February 21, 2014
We are really getting down to the end. Team Mark might have an insurmountable lead, but there is plenty of competition available for the silver or bronze.
Insert Team Name here had one of the best days of her campaign with Viktor Ahn winning double gold in short track, propelling her team to 4th place and in reach of the podium.
The men's curling competition closed out with Sochia Pet (Canada) taking Gold, Cuban Medal Crisis (Great Britain) taking silver, and Insert Team Name Here (Sweden) taking bronze.
Men's Hockey team points and 4-Man Bobsleigh team points are still on the board and waiting to be claimed! The standings can change quickly!
Lots of short track medals handed out - if you had a Korean or Chinese skater you probably got points.
Get ready for an exciting last couple of days of these games!

Day 13: February 20, 2014
Hey everyone - sorry for the delay again. Working and traveling isn't conducive to blog posting.
Here are the standings through yesterday:
Women's Hockey was the big one - Team Mark squeaking out the Gold with the Canadian Women's team over Team USA from Insert Team Name Here.
In another team medal event - Curling medals were awarded for the womens teams!
Live Weyer had the big win from the Canadian Women's curling team. Putin on the Ritz took the silver from Sweden and Gold Rush'n took the bronze with Team GB.
That pushed Putin on the Ritz out of last place! Unfortunately, it puts Gold Rush'n back on track to go for the three-peat of last place again. Still three days to go!

Day 12: February 19, 2014
Sorry for the late update, I was too busy celebrating my big day and moving into 2nd Place!
The USA 1 Women's Bobsled team was leading until the final run, and I thought I had a golden ticket, but unfortunately it turned to silver as they made mistakes that Canada-1 capitalized on quickly. Sochia Pet earned the much needed 10-point gold after a long drought of no medals. My Cuban Medal Crisis took home the 5-point silver.
Cuban Medal Crisis also earned 3 more medals on the day - Bronze in the Giant Slalom from Alex Pinturault, and a double gold for both Emil Hegle Svendsen and Ole Einar Bjorndalen as Norway won the mixed team Biathlon. Gold Rush'n also earned a gold with Tora Berger on the same team. Team Mark earned the silver from the Czech Republic.
Putin on the Ritz is on the board again with a gold from Marit Bjoergen in Cross-Country Skiing.
Team Mark also received ANOTHER medal from Ireen Wust in Speed Skating - now 4 for her in these games. Thankfully it's one gold and 3 silvers or we would be even further behind.
There is still hope in catching Team Mark, as his top potential point earners remaining have tough roads ahead - Yulia Lipnitskaia took a spill in figure skating that did not put her near the top of the leaderboard after arguably being the gold medal favorite going in. Also, cheer hard for the USA Women's Hockey team today as we not only want them to win gold, but also to keep Mark to only earning a silver, as he has the Canadian Women's hockey team.
Insert Team Name Here has the US Women's team so that could impact your rooting interests as well.
Live Weyer was finally boosted by a gold from Ted Ligety in the Giant Slalom, after no doubt expecting more from him during the games to date. I believe he also earned a cross-country skiing silver from Nikita Kriukov.

Day 11: February 18, 2014
Things are heating up coming down the stretch - and that includes the temperatures in Sochi making the conditions suspect and the snow slushy. I love me a slushee, but not at the expense of my point total.
Anyway, here are the updated standings!
The Women's 3000m Short Track team served three teams well - Team Mark, Cuban Medal Crisis, and Silver Sputniks all had members of the gold medal winning South Korean Team. Italy finished 4th, however China was disqualified for trying to sub two skaters at once, so Live Weyer gets a bonus Bronze. Gold Rush'n is the affected team by losing the 3 points China would have earned if the disqualification hadn't occurred.
Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up it's Cold Runnings time. Cold Runnings had one of the best days of their Olympics so far with David Wise winning the ski-halfpipe gold, and getting BOTH the gold and the bronze in same Long-track speed skating event. Nice drafting to pick two Dutch speed skaters, as they swept the event again. Out of 20 medals won by the Dutch, 19 are in speed skating.
One of the big showdowns of the day was in the Biathlon, as my #1 Emil Hegle "Super" Svendsen finally breaks through with a gold medal! I feel (somewhat) vindicated. He faced off with Live Weyer's Martin Fourcade (who now has 13 points and should have been a better pick). The two came down to a photo finish that in a race this long and involved is really pretty crazy. Here's a good write-up about it with a photo finish picture:
http://fansided.com/2014/02/18/sochi-olympics-mens-biathlon-mass-start-results-svendsen-edges-fourcade-photo-finish/
The end result helped Cuban Medal Crisis to actually tie Live Weyer for third in the standings, so clearly Svendsen and Fourcade knew what was on the line.

Day 10: February 17, 2014
Many medals handed out today created large upheaval on the board (except at the very top):
Silver Sputniks rockets up the leaderboard three spots into Silver medal position with an outstanding effort from Meryl Davis and Charlie White in Ice Dancing, and also from Darya Domracheva in Biatholn. The Belarussian has become the MVP of the games so far with 3 gold medals! With still events to go she is approaching a Phelps-ian performance.
Insert Team Name Here also had a big day and TWIZZLED her way up four spots into 4th place with the now double-silver Canadian Ice Dancing team of Virtue/Moir. The first team points were handed out today with the finals of the 2-Man Bobsled. In one of the biggest misses by our SI medal predictions, the coveted 10 point gold medal was not awarded here, as no one drafted the Russian 2-Man team. Sliding on home ice, the driver carrying the country's flag in the opening ceremony, and being a Russian sport legend was still not enough for SI to even put on the medal stand. Granted, I checked the Sports Myriad prediction and they only predicted Bronze, so there must have been some home cooking magic. Anyhow, Team Name still scored the 5 point silver medal with the 2-Man Swiss team. Gold Rush'n was the big loser having chosen the predicted gold medal German 2-Man team, which ended up 10th.
I also discovered a correction in the scoring of Insert Team Name Here while tabulating the points. I noticed that I recorded "Nicole Harp, Austria" as one of her wildcard selections, but forgot the sport. I looked it up and I mistyped "Harp" instead of "Hosp." Nicole Hosp has won a silver and a bronze so far in the Super Combined and Super G, so 4 more points added to her score! She is now well within striking distance of the medal stand.after yesterday being in 8th place.
Don't worry everyone - I always QC the teams and points before giving out the final awards.
Team Mark received another gold (Team Ski Jumping - Germany) and silver (Biathlon) - STOP ALREADY.
Putin on the Ritz and Gold Rush'n each scored a silver in Team Ski Jumping - Austria.
Cold Runnings appropriately scored a Team Bronze (3 points) for the USA 2-Man Bobsled. Poor Jamaica finished dead last in the competition, but first in our hearts.
Sochia Pet has been in a multiple day drought for medals and has slid to 6th place. It just goes to show who we once tabbed one of the most consistent performers can hit a snag. Anything can happen at the Olympics!

Day 9: February 16, 2014
Just like Bode Miller sharing the Bronze, we have another change on the podium. However, no tears are being shed or prodded by a sideline (side slope?) reporter.
Cuban Medal Crisis finally gets another medal with a team Cross Country silver from Russia (Alexander Legkov). The medal propels Crisis into a tie for the Bronze with Sochia Pet.
Team Mark gets another medal BLAH BLAH BLAH. Irene Wust, Netherlands. The best strategy was to pick LOTS of Dutch speed skaters. Sheesh. We are getting crushed by Team Mark. Live Weyer also picked up a speed skating bronze with his Dutch skater, Lotte van Beek, however it's hard to catch Team Mark when even a medal is less points than Team Mark earned in a day.
God Rush'n continues the steady improvement by really having the best day again - Gold team medal for Sweden in Cross Country (Johan Olsson).
No medals for any other team were earned today.
One of the biggest misses has been Kjetil Jansrud of Norway for Alpine Skiing - Gold in the Super G, Bronze in the Downhill, and he was 1st in the downhill portion of the Super Combined and 4th overall. Overall, the alpine skiing medalists have been some of the worst predictions by my review.

Day 8: February 15, 2014
TJ OSHIE! USA vs. Russia in Hockey was the best Olympic moment for the US so far. Really glad I watched the game.
Team Mark extends his dominance today by scoring a couple more medals.
There's a large gap between Mark and the rest of the field, but the middle is getting closer and closer together - only 8 points (2 medals) separate 5 teams with chances at the Bronze position.
I don't have time tonight for too long of a narrative, but I thought it would be interesting to post all the teams with score updates. Be sure to track your team as we all strive for gold! It should make the images larger for viewing if you click on it below.

Day 7: February 14, 2014
Love is in the air...especially if you are Rush'n for Gold you are loving your team today.
The biggest mover of the day was Gold Rush'n who scored a big figure skating gold medal from Yuzuru Hanyu after Patrick Chan didn't seize the moment on the Olympic stage. The silver went to Chan and still were points appreciated by Sochia Pet. Gold Rush'n was also supported by a silver in Cross-Country skiing from Swede Johan Olsson.
Team Mark had a quiet day with no additional medals, which was much welcomed by the rest of the field. Clearly his strategy of picking mostly female athletes has worked out thus far, but none turned out to be a great date for Valentine's Day.
Live Weyer crept closer to the lead with a Skeleton gold from Lizzie Yarnold. Sochia Pet also maintained consistency with the previously mentioned Chan silver and a Skeleton silver from Noelle Pikus-Pace.
Silver Sputniks had the other points achieved on the day with one of the best biathletes so far - the Belarussian Darya Domracheva who has now hit double-gold in Sochi.
Now it's time for the middle weekend, then the home stretch next week. Lots of points to be earned, especially those coveted team points.

Day 6: February 13, 2014
"I am normal people like you. I'm not robot." - Yevgeny Plushenko
Well one team was looking like a robot, but finally only got a bronze and a silver in two events. Still, Team Mark maintains a commanding lead.
The biggest mover and shaker today was Live Weyer riding a huge day of four medals to second place. Second golds in Luge and from Martin Fourcade in Biathlon led the way, with a short track silver and a ski-slopestyle (nose butter!) bronze to follow.
Silver Sputniks picked up a couple of medals to move up to within striking range of the podium.
On a personal team note - my #1 pick Biathlete Emil Hegle "Super" Svendsen - yes he has given himself the nickname - has now finished 9th, 7th, and 7th in events. Sigh. So much for being the Norwegian Michael Phelps.

Day 5: February 12, 2014
More disappointments for Team USA. It is certainly proving hard for two-time defending champions to win the third medal, and that is proving true here. Check out the standings:
The top of the leaderboard is holding steady, but we have a new last place! Putin on the Ritz is the defending back-to-back gold medalist from Vancouver and London, but has a hill to climb to catch back up in these games. There is still a long way to go, but right now it looks like she's pulling a Shaun White or Shani Davis. Fortunately, Putin didn't have either of those non-medalists on her team. (I had Shani - what's up with that? C'mon man!) Life is harder without Michael Phelps dropping points.
On the flip side, Gold Rush'n is the two time defending last place winner, so the first gold earned by her team in the games by Eric Frenzel in the Nordic Combined came at an opportune time to move up the leaderboard.
Team Mark continues to have the golden touch - his team members have only won gold medals so far (5).
However, Sochia Pet has had the strongest overall showing to date by winning 7 medals - 3 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze, tacking on a Nordic Combined bronze from Magnus Krog.
Cuban Medal Crisis scores the first double medalist with the Russian pairs figure skaters powering their way (or salchowing their way?) to the top in the individual and team events. Cold Runnings scored a bronze in the same event.
Another interesting wrinkle in how we split up the lugers (in order to have enough for everyone to pick) placed doubles luge teammates on different teams. Live Weyer and Silver Sputniks each chose one of the "Tobys" as the Tobias German pair struck gold. Germany is the clear favorite for the team relay so these teams are looking to cash in again on a hopeful double gold.
Snowboarding continues to surprise with the favorite women's halfpipe contenders Torah Bright (Insert Team Name) and Kelly Clark (Cuban Medal Crisis) falling to silver and bronze respectively.
The excitement continues tomorrow! Still lots of points on the board to win!

Day 4: February 11, 2014
Lots of medals today, but not many on our teams.
Team Mark maintains the lead with Sochia Pet holding close. Luge and Ski Jumping golds aided those teams. Silver Sputniks received their first gold in Biathlon, and Gold Rush'n is crawling ahead with a Biathlon silver.
Overall a pretty blah broadcast tonight. Come on USA! Where's the drama? The surprise? Feels like we're getting thumped. Even Bob Costas was knocked out!
And if I hear "chattering" one more time. Sheesh! We get it - the halfpipe wasn't great! The boards were chattering! Slushy slushy slushy. Indy fakie nosebone 1080 Mcdouble YOLO whopper twist.

If your big prep right before you compete in an Olympic event is to be sure your headphones wires are tucked in your suit, how is this part of the grandest sporting event of them all? I don't question the athleticism, but boy that's a different scene.

Day 3: February 10, 2014
Not a ton of medals handed out today, but Team Mark and Sochia Pet certainly didn't feel that was the case.
Team Mark surged to the lead behind big gold medals from Maria Hoefl-Riesch in the Women's Super Combined alpine skiing event and Alex Bilodeau in the Moguls.
The touching story from Bob Costas on Alex Bilodeau certainly tugged at our heartstrings. High-five Costas (but be sure you wash your hands first if you touched your funky eye infection).
Live Weyer made a jump with a Biathlon gold from Fourcade, and Insert Team Name moved up with a disappointing bronze from the Korean-turned-Russian Viktor Ahn, who changed to a Russian name because he liked "Victory." Too bad 2 is not a winner and 3 nobody remembers.
On to Day 4!

Day 2: February 9, 2014
Everyone is now on the board!
Things are picking up steam quickly (and then freezing because, you know, it's winter) as we enter Day 2 of the Sochi games. Every team now has a medal winner on board. Get ready for more to drop as the competition continues!
The biggest spreading of the wealth today came through the team figure skating event final. If your team had a Russian, Canadian, or US figure skater on board, you ended up with points. Putin was in the stands, so it was inevitable that Russia would win gold. I'm sure the judges were under pressure.
Insert Team Name Here finally got a snowboard prediction right with Jamie Anderson taking the gold, however this was in the wild card spot and not the drafted snowboarder Torah Bright, who came up short in this event but is the only snowboarder to compete in three events.
Team Mark and Putin on the Ritz had a showdown in Long-Track with Team Mark coming out on top as Irene Wust took the gold for the Netherlands over Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic. Always bet on the Dutch and their crazy aqueduct skaters.
Two Luge medals were handed out today, but NBC had nothing covering it on TV! I was disappointed as I really enjoy watching the luge, but Felix Loch won the men's singles gold as predicted, appropriately supporting Cold Runnings' point total. Armin Zoeggeler was a gold contender but settled for the bronze for Gold Rush'n, getting the team on the board.
The other main points achieved today were on the ski jump with all three medal winners on teams - Cuban Medal Crisis had Kamil Stoch from Poland flying to gold. Cold Runnings had Peter Prevc from Slovenia with the Silver, and Live Weyer gets on the board with Anders Bardal from Norway. Norway has medaled in 7 of 13 events.
Interestingly enough there were biathlon and cross country events today but none of our team members medaled. The games are unpredictable!
Good luck in Day 3.
Day 1: February 8, 2014
The first day of medals being awarded has come and gone. Even though there was an additional day of prelims prior to the opening ceremonies, we're now accumulating points with the first event finals occurring.
Sochia Pet adds some fertilizer and grows into the early lead by being the only team to collect two medal winners on Day 1. He has to credit our Canadian friends, as Justine Dupour-Lapointe stomed to the Moguls gold after Hannah Kearney (much to the disappointment of Silver Sputniks, and the US team) slipped to the bronze after a slight separation of the knees on one mogul. Mark McMorris was also favored for gold in the Slopestyle event, but only produced a bronze for Sochia Pet.
Elsewhere, Putin on the Ritz scored a gold from Marit Bjoergen in Cross-Country, and Cuban Missle Crisis scored a Wild Card Gold from the Biathlete Ole Einar Bjordalen. Cold Runnings correctly chose a Dutch speed skater, which swept the podium, but only received the bronze medal for Jorrit Bergsma.
Onto day 2 and more events to occur. If anyone is interested in following along with your team, the primary website I use to track the medal winners is on the official Sochi 2014 website. It has a page which lists the Daily Medal Winners. Be wary to check if you are waiting to enjoy the drama in prime time.
Here Are Your Teams
Here are all the teams featuring the chosen athletes. My name has been changed to the Cuban Medal Crisis. Kristin D is the only one who has not chosen a team name, so you may see a team name change soon.

2014 Fantasy Olympics Rules
2014 Sochi Winter Fantasy Olympics Rules |
1. Each team will have 17 athletes and/or teams and 1 tiebreaker country. |
2. Draft order will be determined by a random draw. Draft order will reverse each round. Ex. Round 1 will go in order from 1-9, round 2 from 9-1, round 3 from 1-9, etc. Each player gets one pick per round for 18 rounds. |
3. Each
player will select a total of 17 athletes that will fill the following
roster spots on your team: One athlete or team per sport (15) and two wild cards from any sport. Everyone must also choose a country to serve as a tiebreaker. |
4. All remaining athletes will become free agents. However, all teams will lock once the first medal is awarded. Trades may be made between teams, but only on the night of the draft. No changes can be made to the rosters after these first events begin. A player may draft a tiebreaker country in any round, but remember that the medals won by that country will only come into play in the event of a tie. |
5. The winner will be the player with the most points at the end of the 2014 Winter Games. Points will be assigned as follows: INDIVIDUAL EVENTS: 5 points for a gold medal, 3 points for a silver medal, and 1 point for a bronze medal. TEAM EVENTS: 10 points for a gold medal, 5 points for a silver medal, and 3 point for a bronze medal. Each player's final score will be based on an aggregate score from his or her team members. |
6. If an athlete competes in both team and individual events (for example, a skater), that athlete can be selected as an individual, earning medals for both the individual and team events. The team cannot be selected as a unit. If, however, medals in an event are only awarded on a team-by-team basis (for example, hockey), only the team can be selected. |
7. Medal counts will be updated in the official spreadsheet by the Commissioner or the Commissioneress on a more or less nightly basis and posted to the blog http://fantasyolympicgames.blogspot.com |
8. Each player will select one country whose total medal count will be used to determine a winner, in the event of a tie among two or more players' aggregate scores. If the total medal count fails to break the tie, then the gold count, silver count, and finally the bronze count, will be used. |
9. In the event that an athlete on your team is caught doping at any point during the games, you will be deducted 5 points. |
10. In the event that an athlete on your team is kicked out because of a stupid facebook or twitter post at any point during the games, you will be deducted 5 points. |
11. If an athlete is stripped of a medal you will lose the points for that medal. |
